FDM — PETG

The same material as PET-bottles are made from; PETG is a plastic known for its supreme mechanical properties and good optical clarity. Items printed from PETG remain slightly flexible when the cross-sections are thin allowing the plastic to take a fair bit of force before breaking. With its exceptional layer-to-layer adhesion and low shrinkage, PETG is an ideal choice for larger items, both in a prototyping and production environment. We also see PETG as a common material in assembly jigs and fixtures.

Pros

  • Exceptional mechanical properties
  • Slightly bendy, allowing the items to take more abuse without breaking
  • Relatively good optical clarity for being a FDM material

Cons

  • Slightly lower temperature resistance compared to ABS
  • Items are slightly flexible unless designed with thick cross-sections
